Recording Megapixel Cameras On A D1 Recorder

What is the benefit of installing a 2.0 megapixel camera if my DVR is only capable of recording and playback of D1 or 704 x 480 resolution? If the recorder can't support high resolutions what is the benefit of installing a HD 1080P resolution camera?
